This week we gathered as a community to create something healing. We gathered indoors on a chilly day, each family bringing a jar and bundles of fresh ingredients. The table quickly filled – garlic, onions, ginger, turmeric, citrus, peppers & more. With cutting boards and knives in hand, we got to work crafting.
The children joined in, peeling garlic, slicing lemons, and carefully adding ingredients to their jars. Every jar became a reflection of the hands that filled it, each one unique yet tied together by the same intention.
How We Made It:
Making fire cider is simple, and anyone can do it. Here’s what we did…
PREPARE THE INGREDIENTS ~
Each family brought something different, and together we chopped and sliced. I split the items needed into 5 bundles, although some families chose to bring more to contribute to the mix.
Bundle 1: Roots
5 pieces ginger
5 pieces horseradish
Bundle 2: Bulbs
5 onions
5 garlic
Bundle 3: Citrus
5 lemons
5 oranges
Bundle 4: Vinegar + Spice
Apple cider vinegar (raw and unfiltered)
5 jalapeños
Bundle 5: Vinegar + Herb
Apple cider vinegar (raw and unfiltered)
Fresh rosemary
LAYER THE JARS ~
The kids especially loved the part of layering the ingredients into clean jars.
POUR THE VINEGAR ~
Raw apple cider vinegar was poured over the top until every ingredient was fully submerged.
SEAL & SHAKE ~
Over the next 3 – 4 weeks, the vinegar will draw out the flavors / benefits of the ingredients, transforming them into a potent tonic.
For now, we’ll let them steep, but soon we’ll strain and enjoy the fire cider, using it to warm and strengthen our families in the months ahead! This wasn’t just about making a remedy. It was about community coming together, sharing, and teaching our children the beauty of simple traditions. These moments remind us of what really matters: connection, care, and creating something meaningful with the people we love!
